Thyroid Nodule – Excision of Nodule

Thyroid Nodule – Excision of Nodule – Excision of a thyroid nodule refers to the surgical removal of a nodule or mass within the thyroid gland.
Incision: The surgeon makes an incision in the neck, typically along a natural skin crease to minimize visibility of the scar.

Exposure and identification: The surgeon carefully exposes the thyroid gland and identifies the specific nodule or nodules to be removed. In some cases, a portion of the thyroid gland surrounding the nodule (lobectomy) may be removed, while in other cases, the entire thyroid gland (total thyroidectomy) may be removed.

Post-surgery care and recovery will vary depending on the individual and the specific circumstances of the thyroid nodule excision. Hospitalization may be required, depending on the extent of the surgery and the patient’s overall condition. Pain medication may be prescribed to manage post-operative discomfort. The patient may be advised to take thyroid hormone replacement medication if the entire thyroid gland was removed. The surgeon will provide instructions for wound care, activity restrictions, and follow-up appointments.
As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and complications associated with excision of a thyroid nodule, including infection, bleeding, damage to surrounding structures such as the parathyroid glands or recurrent laryngeal nerves (which control voice function), voice changes or hoarseness, temporary or permanent hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormone levels), and complications related to anesthesia.

Syptoms:

  1. Swelling or a visible lump in the neck that moves with swallowing(deglutition).
  2. Difficulty swallowing or a feeling of fullness in the throat.
  3. Hoarseness or voice changes.
  4. Neck pain or discomfort.
  5. Rapid or irregular heartbeat (less common).
